PRTD (PR Travel Document)
Permanent Resident Travel Document(PRTD): About the process
You must apply for a permanent resident travel document (PRTD) if you are outside of Canada and do not have a current PR card. Typically, a PRTD is only good for one entry. As soon as you return to living in Canada, you should apply for a new PR card.
Eligibility
You can apply for a permanent resident travel document if you:
- are a permanent resident,
- do not have a valid PR card showing your PR status,
- are outside Canada, and
- will return to Canada by airplane, boat, train or bus.
How to Apply
1. Get the application package
- You must submit a complete application package, including all required forms and supporting documents specific to your country or territory, in order to apply for a permanent resident travel document (PRTD).
- The instruction manual and all the necessary forms are included in the application package.
- Use the instructions to help you correctly complete the forms, pay the fees, and submit your application. We will send your application back to you if it is lacking any information or is incomplete.
- Once you have applied, we are unable to refund the fee.
- You must demonstrate in your application that you have complied with all requirements to continue to be a permanent resident. Each member of your family who requires a travel document must submit a separate application along with the appropriate fees.
2. Pay your application fees online
You must pay a processing fee when you apply for a PRTD and include your proof of payment (receipt) with either your paper or online application.
3. Submit your application and supporting documents
- If you apply online, you’ll submit all supporting documents through the permanent residence portal.
- You must adhere to the guidelines provided by your nation or territory regarding the format and location of paper applications.
